Pro footballer to pro gamer – how Ander Iturraspe made the switch

Sport is evolving. The boundaries between physical performance and digital competition are merging, allowing professional athletes to extend their competitive careers beyond the traditional field of play.

For Ander Iturraspe, that evolution is already underway.

After more than a decade as a midfielder for Athletic Bilbao – one of La Liga's most iconic clubs – and as a regular in the Spain national squad, he has stepped into the world of esports, bringing with him the mindset, discipline and tactical intelligence forged at the highest level of the game.

We sat down with him at Future Festival in Montenegro to discuss his transition from the physical arena to the digital landscape.
After a career at the highest level of football, how does it feel to start again in esports?

AI: When I was a child, I always played both – football outside and video games at home with my friends. After I retired, I had more time, so I started playing more and enjoying it more. Step by step, I stayed in this world.

Which is more difficult: becoming a top player in football or in esports?

AI: Both are very difficult. There are a lot of competitive players in both worlds, so reaching the top is not easy in either discipline.

Do you see similarities between physical and digital football?

AI: Yes, especially mentally. Physically they are both very different, of course, but in terms of concentration, mental strength, staying positive, tactics and intuition – they’re very similar.

Has your professional football experience helped you as a gamer?

AI: Yes, for sure. I played professional football for many years at the highest level, and that experience helped me. Maybe I’m not the fastest with my hands – but the mentality I developed compensates for that.

You used to play with your feet, now it’s all about your hands. How does that transition feel?

AI: Haha, It’s different, of course. But in both cases, you need to be precise and fast. The tools change, but the demands are still there.

How important is it to maintain a balance between physical and digital activity?

AI: It’s very important. If you stay physically fit, your mentality is better. Even here, I brought my running gear with me. I love to go running – it helps me stay relaxed and focused.
