Heartbreak for home teams in GOTF 2026 Phygital Football quarterfinals

It was another knockout day for the last eight teams in the Phygital Football UFL presented by Samruk-Kazyna competition at the Qazaqstan Sports Complex in Astana.

Hopes were high among the capacity crowd as two home teams – UEL Team and ACF x Allur – were vying for a place in the semifinals. And there was high drama too with two of the matches being decided on penalties.

Here’s how the day played out.

Quetzales-Armadillos v UEL Team

The stands were packed for one of the most anticipated quarterfinals of the day, as Kazakhstan-based UEL Team faced the reigning Games of the Future 2025 champions, Quetzales-Armadillos.

There was nothing between the two sides in the digital stage. Quetzales-Armadillos looked dangerous several times, but UEL Team remained disciplined at the back, keeping the score locked at 0-0.

However, in the physical stage the match really came alive. Magana opened the scoring for Quetzales-Armadillos with a powerful strike that left the goalkeeper with little chance – but both teams continued to show impressive control and skill on the ball. The champions carried their 1-0 lead into halftime before Alisson brought the home crowd back to life in the second half with an equalizer for UEL Team. With no further goals, the match headed to penalties.

There, experience told. UEL Team missed twice from the spot, while Quetzales-Armadillos held their nerve to bring the home side's impressive campaign to an end.

Penarol v Club Holcattes

What a game. Two experienced phygital football teams produced another quarterfinal thriller, with both showing great control from the opening minutes of the digital stage.

Penarol eventually found the breakthrough in the second half before quickly adding another, giving themselves a valuable 2-0 advantage heading onto the pitch. Club Holcattes, however, were far from finished. Samurai produced a magnificent long-range strike from the other side of the pitch to cut the deficit to 2-1 before halftime.

The pressure increased in the second half. With just under three minutes remaining, Santana found the equalizer to send another quarterfinal to penalties. Even then, nothing could separate them. After three attempts each, the shootout remained level and moved to sudden death. Penarol saw their next effort stopped, leaving Club Holcattes with the chance to finish it. They did just that and booked their place in the semifinals. For Penarol, it’s over.

NS Team v ACF x Allur

Astana had already seen one home team eliminated from the quarterfinals. Now ACF x Allur – winners of the recent Phygital Contenders Astana 2026 – represented the city's second chance at a place in the semifinals.

But NS Team had other plans. Two quick goals in the digital stage gave them a 2-0 advantage, and the pressure increased on the pitch. Just 35 seconds in, Chamo struck home to make it 3-0 before adding another minutes later. ACF x Allur finally gave the home crowd something to celebrate when Alexey converted a close-range free kick, giving everyone hope they might stage a comeback in the second half.

After the break, the hosts pushed forward with determination – but that left space at the back. NS Team’s Juanma took full advantage, scoring from distance to make it 5-1. Things went from bad to worse when ACF x Allur’s Max was shown a red card following a heavy tackle. NS Team immediately capitalized, with Gaston firing the resulting free kick into the net.

That was the final blow. ACF x Allur have been eliminated – and with them Astana's hopes of seeing a home team win the championship.

FC OLYMPIC PHYGITAL v FFK "ROTOR CISS GROUP"

The final match of the day would complete the semifinal bracket. FC OLYMPIC PHYGITAL arrived here unbeaten, while FFK "ROTOR CISS GROUP" had been forced to go through the Round of 16 by Quetzales-Armadillos.

There was almost nothing between them. The digital stage finished 0-0 and the physical contest followed the same pattern until the final minute of the first half, when FC OLYMPIC PHYGITAL’s Botirsek finally broke through to take the lead.

On the pitch, Botirsek struck again to make it 2-0, leaving FFK "ROTOR CISS GROUP" fighting to save their tournament. Komar gave them hope with a well-worked goal with just 1:30 remaining, and they came agonizingly close to equalizing with 15 seconds left. But FC OLYMPIC PHYGITAL's goalkeeper made an impressive save to book his team’s ticket to the semifinals.
