There was no let-up in pressure as eight teams battled for survival on the third day of action at the Qazaqstan stadium in Astana. Four squads would live to fight another day – but it was the end of the line for the losing teams as the Round of 16 came to a dramatic conclusion.

So far in this competition, HandsomeMDMX have been perhaps the most dangerous team in the digital stage. So it proved again when they made a strong start and eased to a 20-14 victory on the console. With a 6-point advantage they should have been assured of victory but Flow Game Basketball were determined not to make it easy for them – and with 1 min 30 secs on the clock, they had battled back to even the score 28-28. After that the scoreboard see-sawed between the two teams, the crowd got louder and it really was anyone’s game. In the end, when the clock ran down, it was Flow Game Basketball that were left standing by the narrowest of margins – just one point.

From the very start it was clear that neither of these teams was going to give an inch. The lead swapped back and forth and by the end there was nothing in it – MINSK were in the lead – but by just one point. On the court, the drama continued with neither side able to break away and being forced to throw from beyond the arch to snatch the smallest advantage. With just under 30 seconds on the clock, the scoreboard showed 30-31. A final, last-ditch throw by Tsimafei Paraliou, however, meant both stages finished with the scoreline at 31-31 – and the first decider of the tournament. Understandably, both sides were nervous and missed two baskets each. But, as he had throughout the game, Tsimafei's incredible shot making saved the day and MINSK won the most dramatic contest of the competition so are.

Valencia Basket vs PBC Astana

After such an exhilarating match, the Astana crowd was in for another treat, as their home team stepped onto the stage. But Valencia Basket’s supporters were equally vocal – it was a very noisy affair!

Valencia Basket started stronger in the digital stage, but PBC Astana quickly upped their game, and it was a real battle till the end with Valencia Basket just holding on for a 20-17 lead into the physical stage. Again, the team from Spain started strongest, with Marcos Reos showing his confidence from beyond the arc from his first shot. But PBC Astana were up for the fight. With three minutes to go, it was 29-29, leaving no room for mistakes when survival was on the line. PBC Astana then suddenly found their rhythm to take the lead 29-33 with 37 seconds on the clock. At 12 seconds, Marcos scored another 2-pointer, but it wasn’t enough and the home team held on to secure the win. Of course, the crowd went wild.

Paris Phygital vs Boca Juniors

The final match of the day was every bit as gripping as the three that had come before. Paris Phygital took the digital stage with a five-point advantage and looked good for a place in the quarterfinals. However, Boca Juniors exploded onto the court, showing great partnership between Nacho and Facu. With three minutes to go, they had made up the deficit and then took the lead with 90 seconds remaining. Paris Phygital fought hard, but Boca Juniors were quicker and more accurate – and victorious at the final whistle. It’s Boca Juniors who have booked their quarterfinal slot. Paris Phygital are out.
