The race for Games of the Future 2026 is underway, with the opening day of Phygital Contenders Astana 2026 marking the start of the Phygital Football qualification battle. Across a packed schedule of group-stage matches, teams began their quest to secure a place at the biggest event in phygital sport.

With a diverse field of teams from across the Phygital Football ecosystem, the competition got off to a fast-paced start as teams looked to gain an early advantage in the standings. They knew there was little margin for error and qualification was on the line, so the opening matches offered an early indication of the quality, intensity and ambition on display.

Here’s how the day unfolded:

Group A

Team Cyprus v PANTHER PHYGX

The first match of the tournament saw Team Cyprus take to the digital and physical pitches against relative newcomers PANTHER PHYGX, a squad looking to make their mark on the international stage. PANTHER PHYGX made the brighter start, opening the scoring early in the digital stage, but Team Cyprus quickly turned the game around with three goals of their own to take control. The Cypriot side carried that momentum into the physical stage, where Kkostis Antreas starred with four goals in a commanding 9-3 victory to open their campaign in style.

Los Fieles v Lahore Athletics FC

Peru-based Los Fieles have a number of national youth team players on their side, while Pakistan-based Lahore Athletics FC have won more than 80 local tournament titles, making this one of the most anticipated matchups of the opening round. Los Fieles made a flying start in the digital stage, building a five-goal cushion through an impressive attacking display led by Suarez Domenico and Maluenda Guillermo. Lahore Athletics FC responded strongly on the pitch, matching their opponents with two goals of their own, but Los Fieles held firm to secure a 7-2 overall victory and an early statement result.

Group B

Oeste SP v FC Royal Haki

Oeste SP represents Brazil's Fut7 elite, with a squad featuring players who have represented the Brazilian Fut7 National Team and competed in the Kings League. FC Royal Haki, meanwhile, is a young side assembled through talent identification programs in Mali. While the digital stage ended in a tense 0-0 stalemate, Oeste SP's experience came to the fore once the action moved onto the pitch. Leandrinho struck twice inside the opening ten minutes to set the tone before the Brazilian side pulled away, scoring nine times in a dominant display. Leandrinho finished with five goals, while Marquinhos added two as Oeste SP secured a commanding 9-1 victory.

Noname Club v Skoljke Katic

Noname Club's roster includes several players who competed at the Games of the Future 2025, while Skoljke Katic combines professional footballers from Croatia's Third League with futsal and esports talent. Noname looked on course for victory after securing a 2-1 lead in the digital stage. However, Skoljke Katic produced a clinical response on the pitch, scoring five goals through four different players to complete a convincing turnaround. Lovrekatic and Tunjinho were among the standout performers as the Croatian side transformed a one-goal deficit into a 6-2 victory.

Group C

NS Team v JR Style

JR Style has come into this competition as the champions of Phygital Rivals: Oman – Football for the past two years, establishing themselves as one of the standout teams in the run-up to Phygital Contenders. But Argentina-based NS Team have their own former and current professionals, setting the stage for one of the most evenly contested matches of the opening round. Neither side could find a breakthrough in the digital stage, while the physical match remained locked at 1-1 until the closing stages. With less than 50 seconds remaining on the clock, NS Team finally found the decisive goal to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory.

MNK v Misa Esports

MNK arrived here with serious pedigree. Their roster blends esports stars, including UFL Belarus winner Aleksandr Yasevich and national cyber football team member Stanislau Kruhliakou. Misa Esports, however, feature top-tier league veterans and multiple champions. The match appeared finely poised after Misa Esports edged the digital stage 1-0, but MNK produced one of the most dominant physical-stage displays of the opening round. Led by an explosive attacking performance, the side based in Belarus scored 13 times on the pitch to overturn the deficit and secure a commanding 13-2 victory.

Yaraslau Kashcheyev from MNK said: "Because many of the teams here are new, we didn't know exactly what to expect. Even after losing the digital stage, we remained confident because we know the strength of our team across both disciplines. We showed that on the pitch by taking control from the opening minutes. Now our focus shifts to NS Team. We know it will be a difficult match, but we're ready for the challenge."

Group D

KMF Titograd v FC Olympic Phygital

KMF Titograd is an experienced side with previous Phygital Contenders appearances, while FC Olympic Phygital countered with a roster built around professional futsal players, including national team members and top-tier league veterans. The two teams produced one of the most evenly matched contests of the opening round, with KMF Titograd taking a narrow 2-1 advantage from the digital stage before the physical contest finished level at 1-1. FC Olympic Phygital enjoyed long spells of possession and pushed hard for an equalizer on aggregate, but Titograd held firm to secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory.

ACF x Allur v FC ARARAT-ARMENIA

ACF x Allur arrived as a systematic force, equally strong in both digital and physical football, with five-time national FIFA champion Aknazar Bexeitov leading their roster. But FC ARARAT-ARMENIA boast a squad that includes Armenian Cup winners and national league champions. Representing the host city, ACF x Allur gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about, taking control of the contest with a 2-0 victory in the digital stage. FC ARARAT-ARMENIA responded strongly on the pitch and remained within touching distance throughout the physical stage, but ACF x Allur matched their intensity and found the key moments when it mattered most. A 3-2 result in the physical stage sealed a deserved 5-2 victory and a memorable opening win on home soil.
